The first book in the set, Auralia's Colors, won a Christy Award and captured my attention when I read it. However, the rest of the series, although creative and a beautiful allegory, was at times difficult to follow and introduced so many characters that it became confusing.

Overstreet has a wonderful mastery of vocabulary. His writing is descriptive yet sometimes not concrete enough, making it difficult to imagine what was happening. It takes a lot of concentration to get into the rhythm of his writing. And as a father of three, I usually can't sit down and read longer than five minutes without being interrupted.

I appreciated that Overstreet included a guide at the end of his book to help keep track of the story's characters. Yet I still had trouble keeping them all straight, especially since Overstreet uses a hyphen and two names for each of his characters, and many of them looked the same to me. Other characters are mentioned in brief and then disappear all together.

I'm glad I read the series and did enjoy it. But at this stage in my life, simpler books are easier to read. Now that I know the plotline, twists, and turns, I may pick it up in the future and come to appreciate Overstreet's masterful plot and weaving.

If you're interested, (although it is book four), you can preview the first chapter.

3 out of 5

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

NICK OF TIME by Tim Downs

Warning: Do not read this book in libraries, around sleeping children, or when playing hide and seek. It will have you laughing out loud as you cheer on the Bug Man! I've said time and time again that protagonist Nick Polchak is one of the funniest and most memorable fictional characters you will ever come across.

Although his wedding is only days away, forensic entomologist Nick Polchak can't seem to put aside his work, especially when it comes to solving the murder of a close friend. Hot on the trail of a killer, Nick relies on his understanding of bugs and how they interact with decomposing bodies to find clues other investigators have missed - and in doing so, he unearths secrets from an old cold case.

However, his dedication to all things bugs will cause his fiancée to question his dedication to her. And when Nick is missing in action, she follows Nick to the Poconos with three of her highly trained tracking and cadaver dogs. Hilarity ensues, and a well written mystery follows.

This is Tim Down's sixth Bug Man mystery, and I've loved them all. Except for an occasional simile or metaphor that tries too hard, this book is a great mystery just in time for the summer. I hope Tim Downs continues to write this fun series.

4 out of 5

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishes as part of their blogger review program. Lauren spends a few evenings a week transcribing a 300-year-old journal written by a young woman who witnessed the Salem witch trials - and became a victim before it was over. The deeper Lauren digs into Mercy Hayworth's story, the more she is overwhelmed and moved by the woman's heroic acts. And the more Lauren understands, the more she realizes that just like Salem's citizens, she too passes judgement on others without considering truth first.

This book captured my imagination with its promising premise. What was it really like for a young woman who had her future ripped away from her because of hysteria and the accusation of witchcraft? Written within the safety of a journal, what might she say? I quickly found myself caught up in this story and read it over a weekend. I found the subplots compelling and wondered how this story would end - even though I know Mercy Hayworth would meet a timely end. But what of journal's new owner, an elderly woman with long-hidden secrets? What is she hiding?

Ultimately, this book has me wondering about how easily I judge others and how quickly I make a determination about the lives of others. I've never thought much about judging others, always assuming that I don't. Now I'm not so sure, and it'll be on my mind for a while.

I struggled a little with the ending and how the author justified a particular action as an act of mercy and love. Although I may not agree with the conclusion, I was captivated by this unique plot and enjoyed my escape into Susan Meissner's story.

3.5 out of 5

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

THE MOUNTAINS BOW DOWN by Sibella Giorello

This ain't the Love Boat.

Forensic geologist and FBI agent Raleigh Harmon was looking forward to exploring the Alaskan landscape during a much needed vacation. That was until a passenger is found hanging off the side of the cruise liner. Instead of relaxing in the sun on a deck chair or hiking through the wilderness with a rock hammer, Raleigh is pulled into a confusing mystery linked to Hollywood starlets. And the more she digs, the more she discovers a web of deceit and narcissism. And she only has a few days before the cruise ship ends and all her suspects disperse throughout the world.

I'd been reading a lot of good things about Sibella Giorello and her Raleigh Harmon series. This is book three in the series, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to see what all the buzz was about. The mystery was good, but it never fully captured my attention. I found the plot a little confusing with too many characters and suspects. Because Raleigh is a forensic geologist, there was a great deal of information about science and rock properties. This makes Raleigh a very unique character and Sibella's story lines different from any plots I've ever read. But I've always had a difficult time wrapping my brain around scientific subjects, which may have been a reason I found it difficult to become engaged in this book.

Sibella Giorello is a good writer, and her book The Stones Cry Out won a Christy Award. Maybe it would have helped if I'd read the first two books in the series, but The Mountains Bow Down didn't meet my expectations. If you're interested, you can read an excerpt from her book.

2 out of 5

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishes as part of their blogger review program. But when she disappears without a trace, Hale is thrust into a dark and evil conspiracy. His search for the missing baby leads him into the expansive bayous and to a place that time has forgotten.

Dickson excels at allegorical storytelling, and River Rising's spiritual themes include pride's deceptive nature, racism, the nature of miracles, and Christ's humility.

5 out of 5

THE JUSTICE GAME by Randy Singer

Christ Award winner Randy Singer's The Justice Game is a high adrenaline legal thriller that explores the passionate debate over gun control and the Second Amendment.

Singer kick starts his book with a murder at a TV news station and never lets up. Tension builds as the gun manufacturer is taken to court for turning a blind eye and selling weapons to a gun store that enabled felons to make illegal purchases.

The characters are well developed, and underlying mysteries fuel the suspense as two vying attorneys defend their clients and try to keep an unknown blackmailer from revealing their own long-buried secrets.

Singer, a career lawyer, knows his stuff and writes compelling legal thrillers. The conclusion seemed a little too perfect of an ending, but the story is well developed and the plot kept me more entertained than any of the legal shows now on TV.

4 out of 5

For more information, follow the links below:

Author's note

Read the first chapter

Book trailer

Book discussion questions

Randy Singer discusses his book

HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS by Robert Liparulo

In the first book of Robert Liparulo's young adult Dreamhouse Kings series, Liparulo takes readers over the threshold of adventure into a room of suspense, mystery, and danger. Actually, it's a whole bunch of rooms, with a touch of magic, horror, and boyhood dreams thrown in.

When the King family moves to a new town and into a new home, it's not long before Xander and his brother David discover that the abandoned Victorian house is hiding secrets. Spooky, goose-bump secrets. And when the boys discover a twisting hallway with room after room of odd antechambers, things begin to spiral out of control. Each room is a passage to a different world and a different time - and none of them are safe. Before the Kings understand the house's secrets, Mom is kidnapped by a monstrous man into one of the rooms and disappears.

Liparulo's House of Dark Shadows is Act 1 of the six-book series. Many mysteries and oddities are introduced, and Liparulo will explore these enigmas in future editions. It appears that Liparulo is going to take readers on a wild ride into a house of every boy's dreams - a place that bring adventure and risk to life.

The dialog feel a little stiff in places, but overall, this is the start of an exciting and imaginative read.

Don't take long to find this book's address. Wipe your feet on the welcome mat and enter Liparulo's fascinating House of Dark Shadows.

4 out of 5

THE BISHOP by Steven James

Steven James' novels are smart thrillers with tight writing, engaging characters, intelligent twists, and stories that never let up. In The Bishop, the fourth installment of the Patrick Bowers series, James introduces his first female serial killer as half of a diabolical murdering duo and explores the notion that there is no honor among the cutthroat.

FBI special Agent Patrick Bowers is back, using his understanding of time and place to track down the killers. But they always seem multiple steps ahead, cross contaminating the crime scenes and disguising the ultimate game. With Washington DC as a backdrop and the inclusion of political and scientific aspects, nothing is ever as it seems.

As with his previous books in the series, James allows his characters to struggle with the line between good and evil, darkness and light, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Although the killer's actions are never glorified, the murders are gruesome and disturbing, so readers of tame Amish books beware.

With compelling side stories and links back to his previous works, James creates a story with multiple layers that will stay with you long after you close the book. An excerpt is available.

5 out of 5

NELSON'S BIBLICAL CYCLOPEDIC INDEX

I'm taking a break from my normal fiction book reviews to offer my thoughts on Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index, which is labeled as the best Bible subject index.

When I study Scripture, I enjoy keeping a Bible dictionary, encyclopedia, concordance, and handbook nearby. This book combines many of those resources into one guide. This reference book includes more than 8,000 subjects, names, places, concepts, events, and doctrines, and includes 300 word studies.

For example, this morning I was studying the word "know" from a Bible verse. The cyclopedic index listed the word as one if its word studies, identifying the Hebrew translation and its meaning. Nice. It helped me dig a little deeper.

In addition, I was studying the word "path." The index listed various subheadings for path and where to find correlating scripture references. Subheadings included path of the wicked, path of believers, path of righteousness, and path of the Lord.

Obviously, this cyclopedic index is not exhaustive. Scripture references only offer one correlating verse, regardless of how many references there may be in the Bible associated with that subject.

Path

A. of the wicked:

Brought to nothing........Job 6:18

Becomes dark.................Job 24:13

Is crooked.......................Is. 59:8

(and so on)

For anyone seeking new ways to study scripture, prepare lessons, or write sermons, this small, compact book could be a good place to start. For anyone wanting to really dig deep, keep your Bible dictionary, encyclopedia, and concordance nearby. Overall, this is a nice resource to have in my library.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishes as part of their blogger review program. alt="" />
Whoop! Ladies and gents, this is the tale of two uglies - the selfish heart of a huckster named Floyd who separates gullibles from their coin and Grady, an orphan known as the ugliest boy in the world. Together, they run a popular scam convincing folks that Grady is a mythical creature known as a feechie. And for only a copper, villagers can have a looksee at a genuine, real-live he-feechie. Yet when the townspeople stop believing in feechies, Floyd and Grady have to move on to other flimflams until they decide to pull off the greatest hustle of their lives - The Great Feechie Scare.

In The Charlatan's Boy, Rogers captures the longing soul of a boy. Who is Grady? And where does he belong? Weaving this magical tale through the fantastical country of Corenwald, Rogers takes the reader on a wild adventure into the lives of comical characters and into a community of hucksters, hoaxes, and heroes.

More than a great book, this is a fun book. The Charlatan's Boy engaged my heart and tickled my ears as Grady gives a firsthand account of his life in the feechie trade. Grady's distinct boyish voice makes this story all the better as he uses words like sockdolager, caterwampus, and flusterations. Want a taste? You can read an excerpt from the first chapter.

This story leaves me wanting more from Rogers, and I can't wait to read this book aloud to my children.

5 out of 5.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

POSSESSION by Rene Gutteridge

I remember being glued to the TV in October 2002 when people in the Washington D.C. area were randomly being murdered by snipers. The story was both captivating because of its mystery and level of grief. Thus, when I came across this book that weaved a fictional story through these actual events, I was intrigued.

Vance, a former police officer who worked the D.C. sniper case, leaves the department and travels across the country to escape the past. He hopes this new beginning will help save his marriage and help him move past the horror of October 2002. However, when the men driving the moving van hold Vance's belongings for ransom, Vance senses that something deeper is at work, and it's a dark secret in his past that is hunting him down. Suddenly it's not about his possessions. It's about protecting his family from evil. Murder, mystery, and chaos follow.

Possession kept me turning the pages as I wondered what would happen. I enjoyed the thriller but found myself frustrated that it took so long to reveal the secret in Vance's past. By the time it was revealed, it almost felt like a let down because of all the prior hype. The ending also felt too easy.

Rene Gutteridge's Possession is a story with a great plot line but didn't live up to my expectations.

3 out of 5

I received this book free from Tyndale Publishing as part of their Blogger Review Program. Whereas Broken Angel seemed to have a destination and intelligently worked to get there, Flight of Shadows felt like the storyline wandered too much and wasn't as compelling.

Caitlyn has escaped the freedom-squashing land of Appalachia and finds herself in an unfamiliar country ruled by a hierarchical system and city-states reminiscent of ancient Greece. In search of her friends, Caitlyn tries desperately to stay ahead of government agencies, a sinister bounty hunter, and exploratory scientists who are desperately seeking her DNA to reveal the mysteries behind her wings and life-giving blood. She is befriended by Razor, an illusionist she's not sure she can trust but whom she needs to rely on if she ever wants to find her friends and escape west.

Accepting the truth that history repeats itself, Brouwer does a beautiful job of taking ancient cultures and adopting their societal structures to create a modern world that may not be as far-fetched as it seems. Although I wasn't as drawn to the characters or story this time around, Brouwer makes good on developing speculative fiction that is unique and thought provoking.

If you're curious, you can download the prologue and first chapter.

3 out of 5 stars.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

BROKEN ANGEL by Sigmund Brouwer

Broken Angel is an imaginative tale that twists tyranny on its head. What would happen if a group of Christians separated themselves from the world and created a culture that combines advanced technology with Old Testament law?

With echoes of George Orwell's 1984 and M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, author Sigmund Brouwer weaves a frightening story that establishes a society where Christian beliefs are imposed through earthly power. Instead of purging sin, a new kind of evil is unleashed and freedom is stripped away.

At the heart of the story is Caitlyn, a woman trying to escape the nation of Appalachia and reach the Outside. But she's being hunted by a demonic bounty hunter named Mason, a killer who knows a dark secret about Caitlyn's past.

This is the first book in a series of stories by Brouwer. The action is fast-paced with lots of secrets and no unrealistic surprises. The faint of heart should be warned that there are a few scenes of torture. I look forward to the second installment of this series, Flight of Shadows.

4 out of 5

ALMOST HEAVEN by Chris Fabry

Chris Fabry writes sweet, character-driven stories. In Almost Heaven, Fabry tells the fictional story of Billy Allman, a West Virginia backwoods native and master mandolin player. It's Billy's dream to run his own radio station, and he pours his heart and soul into making that longing come true. But things always seem to go wrong. Billy's life is fraught with tragedy, from a devastating flood to the tragic loss of his parents to the evil behavior of a father figure. Behind the scenes, the reader catches glimpses of an angel named Malachi who is active in Billy's life, watching over him and protecting him.

Over the past few years, Fabry has been through his own tragedies, and this book captures a message that comes straight from his heart and personal experiences. We don't always know why things happen, but we can always trust in the One who creates beauty from ashes.

I found it interesting that the idea for the character Billy Allman and his radio station is based off the life of a real man. A reader wrote Fabry a letter, telling him about a man who poured his life into serving God and had recently died. I just would like to say, a lot of people didn't know Billy... [But] I know when he walked into heaven yesterday, heaven knew Billy. He was an important person to them.

Chris Fabry's book Dogwood had one of the best twists I've every read. His book June Bug captured my heart and is one of my all-time favorite books. Almost Heaven, although good, didn't capture my heart like his other books. I didn't connect with the characters this time and the plot felt slow. But Fabry is still one of my favorite authors and he writes great stories, and I look forward to his next endeavor.

3 out of 5

I received this book free from Tyndale Publishing as part of their Blogger Review Program. His book The God Cookie had me laughing out loud, and his characters' dialogue is a pleasure to read.

Parrish is a coffee shop owner who tells God that he's listening and will do whatever God says. A few minutes later, he opens a fortune cookie and reads the text: Take the corner. Unsure of its meaning, Parrish begins a journey of learning how to trust God and then do the next thing. Parrish guesses that the corner might be a street corner and bus stop near by, and he hangs out there trying to figure out God's plan. When he discovers a lost letter in which the writer is crying out for help, Parrish believes that it is his mission to find and help the author of the mysterious letter.

The book's premise is simple, yet so often it's a message we avoid. What would happen if I told God, "I'm all in"? How would my life be different if I spent more time listening and obeying God's voice than feeding the hunger of pride, busyness, and indifference? Geoffrey Wood explores the possibilities through the life and obedience of a coffee shop owner who makes mistakes along the way but in the end discovers the power, joy, and excitement of a life lived all out for God.

If you haven't read a book by Geoffrey Wood, this is a good one to start with. It's slow at times, but I often read it with a smile on my face and a laugh ready to break free.

3 out of 5.

THE KNIGHT by Steven James

After I read The Pawn by Steven James, I didn't think he could top it. Then I read The Rook and thought that would be my favorite. Now I finished The Knight, and I am again amazed at how much I'm enjoying this series.

James weaves a story of a serial killer who has a story to tell. Hot on his trail is FBI agent Patrick Bowers. With a tale that integrates ancient books, the Renaissance, a heartless killer, and an evil game, Bowers tries to stay alive long enough to capture the murderer who always seems to be a step ahead.

Steven James' books are well thought out, captivating, exciting, and don't shy away from showing evil for what it is. Without glamorizing the darkness, James provides a character who wrestles with doing the right thing while exploring the blackness in his own heart - and at the same time giving us a man we can route for. I'm looking forward to reading the fourth installment of this series, The Bishop.

GREAT PARENTS, LOUSY LOVERS by Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham

I've been married for six years and have three kids ranging from 4 1/2 years old to four weeks. It's hard for me now to remember the days when it was just my wife and me, when all our attention was on each other. Now, instead of holding hands we hold babies in the middle of the night; now, instead of rubbing her feet or going out on a date, I'm wiping baby bottoms and breaking up arguments between the two oldest.

When I saw this book's title, I knew I wanted to read it.

My wife and I strive to be good parents, and in doing so, sometimes we completely run out of energy and passion for each other. Authors Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham write a much-needed book that gets to the heart of couples with small children. One of the best ways to parent is to first love your spouse.

Smalley and Cunningham provide simple ways for couples to again focus on each other in the midst of a hectic parenting lifestyle. While these tips were good, I most appreciated the authors' approach to explaining why spiritual aspects are so important in a marriage. A good marriage is founded on a faith in Jesus Christ. If you're not living your life in recognition of his authority and presence in your life, you're falling short and your marriage will suffer.

I'll be keeping this book on my bookshelf and going to it during times I feel my wife and I separated by the toils of parenthood. Any of their suggested dates are sure to get us back on track and reminding us how important our marriage relationship is to our parenting skills.

I received this book free from Tyndale Publishing as part of their Blogger Review Program. It's a grab-you-and-won't-let-go thriller. FBI agent Patrick Bowers is an expert environmental criminologist who studies the significance of time and space in crime investigations. His newest case involves a cunning serial killer who's killed eight women and calls himself The Illusionist. The killer leaves a number of calling cards, including a yellow ribbon and a chess piece--and he always seems to be a step ahead.

With a back story linked to the Jamestown Massacre and Jim Jones, James weaves an exciting story that captured my imagination and kept me guessing to the end. This book is not for the faint of heart. It is graphic and doesn't shy away from the dark side of evil. But that's what makes hope, light, and integrity that much more powerful. I look forward to reading his second book, The Rook.

This book was nominated for a Christy Award in 2008.

4.5 out of 5

LOVE, CHARLESTON by Beth Webb Hart

I know what you're thinking, because it's the same thing my wife said to me. "What are you reading? It looks feminine."

Yes, I'm reading a girly book. But I have good reasons.

First, I love a good story, and I've come to realize that great stories come in all kinds of packages. Sometimes the best tales are from books I wouldn't normally give a second glance. So, rather than only reading stories that capture my interest, I challenge myself to read books I think my wife might like. Which is why I read this book. I'm always on the lookout for stories that will capture my wife's heart, and by reading the same books she reads, I connect with her in deeper ways. It's another link between our hearts, another bond that strengthens our marriage.

Author Beth Webb Hart's book "Love, Charleston" is not a light, easy read. It revolves around some pretty painful themes like postpartum depression, adultery, and family jealousy. Which is why this book is a powerful story. As Christians, we hate to admit our downfalls and sins. If Christ is in our heart, our lives should be joyful and complete. But we all deal with struggles that we hope our friends and family will never discover. But that's exactly why three women can pull through their own struggles, the power, love, and support offered by family.

Anne is a few years away from being over the hill and longs for a husband. Years ago, she heard God's voice giving her a promise. But now she is starting to wonder if she misheard or misunderstood God. Alisha has a perfect family, home, and family, but when a frightening depression emerges, it completely unravels her life. Della struggles with feeling like she's made a mistake and married the wrong man. She is jealous of Alisha's lifestyle, especially compared to her home without AC and a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle.

This story doesn't provide a perfect ending, but it does offer a theme that is true in every Christian's life. Hope. We have hope in Jesus Christ, who offers joy that overcomes the messes of this life. And if offers an encouraging tale that captures the importance of female friendships.

Of note, I felt the back cover's book description didn't capture the true heart of this book. It implies that the book will revolve around Anne, but most of the viewpoint comes from Alisha and Della. I kept waiting for the book to focus more on Anne, but it never did, and her story felt more like a sidebar than a major theme.

3 out of 5

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishes as part of their blogger review program. I grew up watching Law and Order and reading John Grisham. Legal thrillers are some of my favorite stories, and By Reason of Insanity captured my attention and kept me turning the pages.

By Reason of Insanity follows Las Vegas defense attorney Quinn Newberg on two cases as he uses the insanity defense to argue for his clients' innocence. Quinn's first client is his sister, Annie, on trial for murdering her husband. The second is a young newspaper reporter, Catherine, who has had visions of recent murders, and the police arrested her as prime suspect number one. Quinn believes that Catherine suffers from fractured personality disorder, which has motivated her to pursue a vigilante justice against rapists and their lawyers. As he tries to discern the truth and keep Catherine from being found guilty, he's also faced with caring for his niece while Annie sits behind bars.

Randy Singer is one of my new favorite authors. He's an experienced trial attorney and award-winning author. This book was nominated for a Christy Award in 2009, and its intense writing, well-designed plot, and believable twists make this book an excellent read.

4 out of 5.

JUNE BUG by Chris Fabry

It's rare for me to find a book that captures my attention with a single sentence:

I believed everything my daddy told me until I walked into Walmart and saw my picture on a poster.

And it's even more rare for me to find a book that not only lives up to its potential but also surpasses my expectations. It's books like June Bug that touch my heart and remind me why I love a good story.

For as far back as she can remember, June Bug has driven around the country in an RV with her dad. There's never a destination, only an adventure to where the road leads. At night they park at Walmart. During one stop at Wally World, June Bug pauses to look at the Missing Children posters hanging at the entrance. To her astonishment, she sees a girl named Natalie who looks just like her. This discovery starts June Bug on a journey of discovery and truth. If this man in the RV is not her father, who is he? And where is her family? From the very beginning, this book captured my imagination. I fell in love with the characters, cared for them, and felt their joy and pain.

This is the second book I've read by Chris Fabry. Last year, Dogwood mesmerized me and became one of my favorite books of all time. I liked this one even more. And I'm not the only one. This book was nominated for a Christy Award this year. I read about 25 fiction books a year. This is the first one I've rated a 5 out of 5 in the past three years. I can't wait to read Fabry's newest book coming out this fall.

THE SECOND THIEF by Travis Thrasher

Tom Ledger works in marketing and sales and is ready to quit his high-paying job. But before he leaves, he steals secret information from his employer and sets up a deal to sell it to a buyer named Sloan. On his way to meet the thug, Tom's plane has engine problems and the aircraft crash lands in a Nebraska cornfield. .

Tom is not a religion man, and his faith is only in himself. Life is what you make for yourself, he says. Bury yourself in work and make a good life. But Tom's life is full of secrets, mistakes, and ugly realities. Suddenly faced with his own death, he utters a simple prayer, "Please God, please let me live."

Thus begins Tom's journey into a second-chance life. He survives the crash and begins to wrestle with questions that he's ignored for years. This book is not so much a story about an airplane crash as it is one prodigal son's introspective journey to find Truth in life.

This is a quick read and the plot moves at a slower pace than most of Travis Thrasher's novels. He throws a twist in the story that I did not expect, and although I understand how it moved the story forward, it was a surprise that I had difficulty accepting. That said, I've enjoyed reading Thrasher's novels and appreciate his ability to write great stories, and I look forward to reading more of his books.

If you're interested in the story behind the story, check out Thrasher's blog.

3 out of 5

SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME by Ron Hall and Denver Moore

This is one of the best books I've read in the past few years. It's message cuts straight to the heart, and I've found myself thinking again and again about the story and its remarkable true characters.

Denver Moore grew up picking cotton in literal slavery. In the 1960s, he hid on a train and escaped his life of misery, only to adopt the life of a homeless man on the Texas streets. He was alone, and the world had turned its back on him. And then a woman named Deborah walked into his life. She and her husband, Ron, were a wealthy couple that had recently begun serving at the local homeless mission. Denver tried to reject Deborah's efforts to befriend him, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. What followed is the story of a remarkable friendship, and how three people from different worlds discovered that they had more in common than they realized, and just how much they needed each other.

This true story strips life down to Christ's words in action: love your neighbor as yourself. Over the past few years, I've been praying to live a life in close connection to God in a moment-by-moment relationship. I loved reading about Denver's relationship with God and how close they were and how clearly Denver heard from God.

Sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives we miss the plights of those around us, and we are so busy finding ourselves that we close our eyes to the lost and hurting. This book convicted my heart and is making me reevaluate my priorities.

Highly recommended. 4.5 out of 5.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. I've been to the local museum, studied his life, and as a newspaper reporter, interviewed people who witnessed his speech. Thus I was excited to read Christian Encounters' Winston Churchill.

This book is a great summary of important dates, people, and events in Winston Churchill's life. It provides a peak into the spiritual life of Winston Churchill. As a future homeschool dad, I think this will be a great resource when studying his life. However, currently as a parent of small children, I frequently had to stop reading and found it difficult to pick up where I left off. This is not a long book but it took me a while to finish.

I've come to greatly respect Winston Churchill, and this book affirmed my beliefs that he was an honorable and courageous man.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. Born into a family of privilege, Patrick is kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Ireland. After six years as a slave, Patrick escapes and returns to his family in Britain. Yet before he can return to his former life, the Lord comes to him in a vision and tells him to bring the good news to his former captors. Thus is the story of the first Christian missionary to take the gospel beyond the Roman Empire to barbarians at the ends of the earth.

THE MESSAGE: Many lessons can be drawn from the life of Saint Patrick. Yet the one that comes through clearest is Patrick's unwavering faith that through all of his misfortunes and struggles, the Lord's loving hand is behind every circumstance. Just like Paul brought the gospel to the Gentiles, Patrick brought the gospel to a country that did not know God's love and grace.

THE PRESENTATION: As author Jonathan Rogers stated, all that can reliably be known about Saint Patrick is gathered from two documents that he wrote, which totals less than 20 pages. However, there are many legends that surround his life. Jonathan Rogers explores Patrick's writings and his legends and weaves them into an understanding of the life and times of 400 AD. Together, this biography paints a realistic portriat of Saint Patrick.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I knew very little about Saint Patrick before I read this brief biography. Now I've come to respect and appreciate the life of a humble man who lived out his faith with courage and brought the gospel to Ireland.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4 out of 5

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. She encourages girls to embrace their unique traits and learn to wear eight life accessories: security, identity, value, love, self-control, peace, joy, and contentment.

THE MESSAGE: Jenna digs deep into her top eight life accessories and shows why girls should desire God's view of beauty. She encourages girls to trust that no matter what, they have a God who loves them; to know who they are and whose they are; to know they are treasured; to know God's love for them so they can love others; to make good decisions; to believe God is in control; to know the source of all joy; and to find contentment in who God made them to be.

THE PRESENTATION: The book is designed to be introspective and reactive. Jenna leaves room in the book to write thoughts and answer questions. She offers physical beauty tips--everything from using sunscreen to creating healthy bedtime routines. Her dad, well-known author Max Lucado, also offers his two cents occassionally, providing a fatherly perspective.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Having daughters, I appreciated Jenna's frankness and realness. I desire my girls to grow in true beauty, and this book offers a solid foundation on that journey.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free Thomas Nelson publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. Although there are storms in this life, we need to always remember who is there in the storm with us—an unstirred Christ. The one statement Jesus made more than any other was, “Don’t be afraid.”

THE MESSAGE: Fear raises doubts about Jesus character and corrodes our confidence in God’s goodness. It’s our perceived loss of control. It deadens our recall of God’s miracles and we forget all the Lord has done for us. Living a fearless life is about learning to listen to the voice of God, not dread and worry. Rather, courage means focusing on God in the storms and not relying on our own strength.

THE PRESENTATION: Lucado addresses numerous fears, including, the fears of not mattering, disappointing God, and overwhelming challenges. At the beginning of each chapter, Lucado takes a verse in which Jesus tells us not to fear, not to be afraid, or to take courage. Each scripture addresses different situations, and Lucado uses these to speak against the universal fears many of us face.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Lucado’s writing is again simple and straight to the heart. Easy to understand yet profound in its message. While I didn’t relate to all of the fears that Lucado includes, there were a handful that pulled at my heart and seemed to speak straight to me. This is definitely a book I’ll keep on my shelf, and the next time I can’t fall asleep because of worry, fear, or dread, it’ll be a great resource to draw upon.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4 out of 5

LESS THAN DEAD by Tim Downs

THE SUMMARY: As construction crews begin work to build a large mall, they uncover a long-forgotten cemetery. Mysteries and secrets abound when it is soon discovered that two sets of human remains are buried above the caskets. Entomologist Nick Polchak is hired by the FBI to help determine if it is the work of a serial killer. Complicating the investigation is the fact that the land is owned by presidential candidate Senator John Henry Braden—who wants the entire situation handled delicately to keep from derailing his bid to become Commander in Chief. Nick is not known for wearing kid gloves, and he soon recruits the Witch of Endor to help in the investigation. The citizens in the nearby town of Endor consider Alena Savard a witch because she is known for talking with animals and roaming the woods in search of her missing father. The deeper Alena and Nick dig, the more they uncover long-held secrets—secrets that someone doesn’t want revealed, secrets that are worth killing for.

THE MESSAGE: 1) Lies and secrets will be discovered. 2) Who might be capable of murder? Everybody.

THE PRESENTATION: Of Tim Down’s four Bug Man novels, this book focuses less on the bugs that feed on decomposing bodies and more on the expertise of cadaver dogs—man’s best friends with the ability to sniff out the dead. Also of note, Tim Downs reintroduces FBI agent Nathan Donovan of Plague Maker fame.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Nick Polchak returns in the fourth installment of the Bug Man novels by Tim Downs. Downs again delivers a page-turner that is suspenseful from the start. With unique characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and unexpected twists, this mystery will not disappoint.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4 out of 5

GUN LAKE by Travis Thrasher

THE SUMMARY: Five inmates break out of Stagworth Prison and are on the run. After a few thefts and bodies are left in their wake, they trek to Gun Lake in Michigan to lay low. Also converging at Gun Lake are numerous broken souls—Norah, trying to flee from an abusive husband; Don, drowning his heartache with alcohol; Michelle trying to break down the walls with her rebellious teenage son, Jared. They and others desire to escape from past mistakes, but at the same time, fear there is no hope in the future. Slowly, all their lives intersect at Gun Lake and an explosive outcome follows.

THE MESSAGE: Many characters in this book are searching for hope—hope for the future and escape from the past. Some try to solve their problems with worldly wisdom while others discover the power of forgiveness offered in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

THE PRESENTATION: Travis Thrasher creates a slow-burning suspense novel, one that gradually turns up the heat until the climax reaches a boiling point. Written from the perspective of half a dozen characters, readers need to be prepared to follow multiple storylines until the tales begin to merge. Many of the characters have mysterious pasts that take a while to emerge, but that’s part of the fun—trying to discern how some of them are connected.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The characters truly struggled with determining what is the right action in a world that is not clear cut. Right actions are taken for the wrong reasons. Wrong actions are motivated by right thoughts. It reminded me of something one of my mentors once told me: “I don’t care what you’ve done wrong. I want to know what you’re going to do to make it right.” That is what this book is about. Determining the right and discovering hope.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4 out of 5

WHERE MERCY FLOWS by Karen Harter

THE SUMMARY: After 7 years of little contact with her family, prodigal daughter Samantha comes home to her family. Accompanying her is TJ, her young son, a medical condition that will cut her down in the prime of her life, and years of sin and rebellion. There is more separating Samantha from her family than missing years however, especially between her and her father, a man she calls The Judge. Not only does she feel unloved by her father, but she has a husband who left her the day TJ was born. Will Samantha find love, forgiveness, and mercy before it’s too late?

THE MESSAGE: This story presents many themes, including understanding the depths of a father’s love and the power of forgiveness, mercy, and sacrifice.

THE PRESENTATION: Karen Harter’s first book explores a prodigal daughter’s wandering and her search for a way home. Although a powerful message, some of the scenes felt like too forced to meet a determined conclusion. I didn’t fully connect with the characters or truly felt Samantha’s struggles. For instance, she viewed her father as a harsh, unbending man, but I had trouble seeing him in that light.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Karen Harter’s book won a Christy Award. Although good, I felt the book wrapped up too neatly and easily. I hoped the book would explore a few themes that were hinted at but the author went in a different direction. It’s a good story, but I never felt myself truly rooting for the characters.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 2.5 out of 5

BLINDED by Travis Thrasher

THE SUMMARY: Michael flew to New York City in hopes of finalizing a business merger. Yet when the deal falls through, he finds himself sipping a Pinot Grigio wondering how everything fell apart. He’s frustrated, anxious, and depressed. And then a beautiful woman, Jasmine, catches his attention—and she seems to show a little interest in him. “Mind if I join you,” she asks. Michael thinks of his wife and two kids at home, but wonders what’s the harm? He’s not going to do anything. Yet as the next few hours pass and the night gets darker, Michael wonders how he ended up so far down a road he never intended, a night filled with rough men, guns, and sexual tension. A little compromise here and a little harmless rationalization there. Will Michael find his way back before it is too late? And does he want to?

THE MESSAGE: Don’t rationalize sin. Evil never jumps up and says, “Here I am—embrace me.” Rather, it says, “You deserve this,” or “Nobody will know, enjoy yourself,” or “You’re not really doing anything wrong.” Yet like the young man in Proverbs who walked down her street at dusk, it doesn’t take long before you’re led like a bull to the slaughter.

THE PRESENTATION: Travis Thrasher uses a unique method of storytelling—using the narrative form of the second person. Rather than using the traditional “I” or “he,” Thrasher uses “you.” Although a difficult way to write, Thrasher pulls it off, making it a more personal story for the reader than either of the other traditional ways.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This book shows the danger of lust and sin. As a man, it’s too easy to rationalize lust. Yet when the guilt is ignored, a few half-truths are told, and we don’t run away from the sin, what started as a temptation can quickly spiral into becoming a prisoner of that sin—and the ugly consequences that follow.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4 out of 5

FIRST THE DEAD by Tim Downs

THE SUMMARY: In book three of the “Bug Man” novels, Nick Polchak, a forensic entomologist (a North Carolina professor who studies the bugs that feed on dead bodies) reports for duty in New Orleans hours before Hurricane Katrina comes ashore. Originally volunteering as part of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, Nick is frustrated to learn that he’s assigned to rescue “the living” from roofs and attics rather than searching for the dead. “First the living” he’s ordered. However, Nick soon realizes that the dead have a lot to tell about the living because a killer is using the hurricane to cover up his murders. Only Nick and his coke-bottle glasses can see the value of the bugs—and the truth.

THE MESSAGE: Follow the truth wherever it may lead. Also, a father is a powerful role model in the life of a boy.

THE PRESENTATION: Nick is a quirky, loveable character fast with the sarcasim and short on friendship. Long ago he stopped viewing himself as human, finding that he relates more to the insects that he studies. Author Tim Downs shows the depth of his research in his writing, although a few times he loses the story in the details.

FINAL THOUGHTS: A fun, suspenseful story that makes for great summer reading. I enjoy the Bug Man novels, not so much for their underlying message but because they are captivating and easy reading that makes me laugh and keep turning the pages. Tim Downs knows how to write suspenseful, original stories, and his character Nick Polchak is one of the most memorable and unique heroes I've ever come across.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 3.5 out of 5

DOGWOOD by Chris Fabry

THE SUMMARY: This is the story of a small town’s pain that has lasted more than a decade, the tragic death of two young girls involved in a car accident. It’s the story of a young man sent to prison. It’s the story of a young woman struggling with a burden that is buried deeper than she knows. It’s the story of a brother haunted with guilt too heavy. It’s the story of an elderly woman who can see through past wounds and bring truth into the darkest of circumstances. It’s the story of sacrifice and love.

THE MESSAGE: The message of the book can’t be shared without giving away its secrets. But it’s about deep love, forgiveness, and facing the truth.

THE PRESENTATION: Each chapter is told from one of four different perspectives. It’s not hard to follow the character jumps, but the reader does need to be aware. Also, much of the story is shrouded in mystery, so it takes a little time to put some of the pieces together to follow what is happening. It’s a captivating read, and one that caught my imagination and wouldn’t let go.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I thought I’d figured out how the story would end. Some of it I got right, however, there were a few twists that took my breath away. It made me go back and reread a number of chapters, and I wonder how my perspective of the book would change now that I see the entire picture. It’s definitely one I feel I need to reread to fully appreciate. And I’ve found that my thoughts continue to return to the book and its message. Very powerful.

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4.5 out of 5

HIGHER HOPE by Robert Whitlow

THE SUMMARY: Law clerk Tami Taylor only has a few summer months to make an impression on the firm's partners that she is worthy of becomming an associate. But it's not easy, and her firm Christian beliefs sometimes put more of a target on her back than she desires. When she begins working on a libel case against an all-too-honest and possibly prophetic preacher who won't bend when a developer tries to take church property, Tami learns if she has what it takes to truly live out her faith. In the meantime, she's dealing with two honorable suiters, her Quaker-like family who question life decisions she's making, and the illness of an elderly friend.

THE MESSAGE: Although there are many underlying messages one could take away from this book, one thread of truth explored the depths of faith. It's easy to say you follow Christ, but what does that really look like, especially when those around you see it as foolishness and odd. For Tami, she has to look in the mirror and decide if she is a Christian who is a law clerk, or a law clerk who is a Christian.

THE PRESENTATION: Robert Whitlow is known for his courtroom thrillers, so that's what I expected. Sure, the story revolved around the law, but it takes close to 150 pages before the case is up and running. More of the story is about Tami taking a man home to her family where he learns more about the family's "old-fashioned" lifestyle: courtship, no work on sunday, limited contact between a young man and woman, etc. I think I'd have enjoyed this Book #2 in the Tides of Truth series more if I understood that it was less of a court case and more of a story about a woman deciding what she believes--and how that meshes with her family's beliefs and her future as a law clerk.

THE QUOTE: “There's truth greater than your fears and worries. One of those truths is higher hope. It's hope that can't be destroyed by what happens on earth. Circumstances of life will challenge it, voices will deny it, but its walls can't be breached unless we open the gate.”

THE RECOMMENDATION: 3 out of 5

THE NOTICER by Andy Andrews

THE SUMMARY: Down on his luck and with little hope, 23-year-old Andy had a life full of frustrations and little else. He lives in a hole under a pier and “bathes” in hotel pools. But when a mysterious old man named Jones finds Andy close to tears, he gives the young man a gift that changes his life—the gift of perspective. He teaches Andy to look at his life through a different lens, thus opening the door to new opportunities. And as Andy comes to find out, Jones has given this gift to many others struggling in the community.

THE MESSAGE: Life is a matter of perspective. Change your perspective and you can change your approach, opportunities, lifestyle, even what others think of you. As Jones’ said, “A life filled with opportunities and encouragement finds more and more opportunities and encouragement.”

THE PRESENTATION: Although Andy Andrews makes good points in The Noticer, many of his narratives lacked originality and bordered clichés. For example, to a married couple facing divorce, Jones talks about love being expressed in different dialects—a wink and nod to Gary Chapman’s “The Five Love Languages.” Individuals feel and express love in different ways, and understanding your spouse’s dialect can change your marriage. And to a man who is constantly worrying, Jones tells him to every morning write down things he is thankful for because the “seeds of depression cannot take root in a grateful heart.” Good advice but hardly original.
Overall, I think I was expecting more from Andy Andrews. His book is a good reminder of ways to look at life differently, and that by changing your perspective, you can change your circumstances. Unfortunately, this tale falls short of inspirational.

THE QUOTE: “You ate sardines and Vienna sausages in the sand. I dined on surf and turf with an ocean view. It’s all about perspective.”

THE RECOMMENDATION: 2 out of 5

EMBRACE ME by Lisa Samson

THE SUMMARY: For a majority of this book, this story takes place years apart. One is the story of Valentine, aka Lizard Woman, who travels with a group of other freaks in a sideshow troup. A tragic event disfigured her face years before, and she struggles with past demons that won't allow her to move forward. Befriended by a tatooed, hippie, motercycle-ridin' monk, she struggles with redemption and forgiveness. The second tale is about a former high-profile preacher named Drew that now has a tendancy to extinguish his cigarettes on his skin to release his inner turmoil. Their lives eventually cross in a small North Carolina town, both discovering the meaning of true forgiveness and redemption.

THE MESSAGE: Although this story dealt heavily with learning to forgive and be forgiven, and the miracle of a redeemed and renewed life, I'm amazed at Lisa Samson's ability to help the reader see beyond the facade of the people we see every day into the pain of their hearts. And even though the characters in this book are far from normal--a limbless woman, stretch-man, simese twins, a mother who deserted her child, a father with too-high standards--it's a beautiful thing to see these individuals used in the Body of Christ, His church. Too often, our fiction heroes are perfect, but this story presents people who are learning to walk through their mistakes and failures.

THE PRESENTATION: The two stories take place approximately six years apart. Drew's tale is told in a letter he writes to a priest willing to listen. It's an interesting way of storytelling, and worked most of the time. The other first-person perspective comes from Valentine, and every chapter switches between the two storytellers. Where Quaker Summer sometimes fell into preaching, this story lets the characters' actions and thoughts do the talking. It's somewhat a slow start, but once you figure out where it's heading, hang on.

THE QUOTE: "It's never too late for redemption. The scars never run too deep, so deep that God is not there."

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4.5 out of 5

THE QUOTE:

QUAKER SUMMER by Lisa Samson

THE SUMMARY: Heather Curridge is a woman who has it all by the world's standards--a doctor for a husband, a respectful son, a beautiful home, lots of money, and a tennis court ready to be installed. But all of this can't fill the void in her heart, a haunting from her former self. She's lost and in search of a life well lived. A life of purpose. And when she stumbles into the lives of three women, a nun and two Quakers, who have little in this life but lots to give, she wonders if she's found the answer. But it's not a quick or easy answer, for it involves forgiveness, drug dealers, doubt, sacrifice, and grief. And in the end, hope.

THE MESSAGE: Lisa Samson crafts a story that makes you take stock in your life. Are you imitating Jesus in your life, reaching past your selfish worldview to use your gifts to serve others? Or when you stand before the King, will you say, "I kept a clean house, I made sure my child was athletic, musical, artistic, and got good grades, I was present at all the important church activities, and I changed the oil in my car every three thousand miles because I was such a good steward of my blessings?"

THE PRESENTATION. Lisa Samson takes a raw look at pride and humility, selfishness and selflessness. Written from first person, Heather is a little scatterbrained and can easily lose her train of thought, but it's usually not too hard to follow. It made me realize that as we pull back layers of our humanity, the more we need God's grace and His covering.

THE QUOTE: "God wants us to care for the poor and the lonely and the sick, not just for their sake, but for ours. Because in this, we become like Him, growing a bigger heart than we ever thought possible. . . It's redemption time, and will you come to the well and drink deep? You'll get far more than you could ever give. Don't die in the desert of your Christian radio, Pottery Barn lives."

THE RECOMENDATION: 4 out of 5

THE GIFT OF PSALMS

The Gift of Psalms - Devotional Wisdom from 50 of the Best Loved Psalms is a wonderful collection of Biblical poetry and applicable wisdom. Each devotional contains a psalm and accompanying explanation by Lori Jones. Jones also concludes each section with a heart-felt prayer.

Also included are three CDs with 30 of the psalms and devotionals narrated by famous actors, including the voices of Gary Sinise, Richard Dreyfuss, Jason Alexander, and Sean Astin.

This devotional set is designed as a simple daily devotional that aims to help the reader discover new insight into these beloved Psalms. Although it will not take the place of a deep quiet time, it does provide spiritual truth.

Especially for Christians who have read many of these Psalms time and time again, a different perspective can provide a breath of fresh air. Also, hearing the Word instead of reading the familiar passages can emphasize truth often overlooked. The CDs offer commuters the ability to spend time in the Word during travel and families a devotional to listen to after dinner.

Although there are numerous audio Bibles and collections available, The Gift of Psalms offers a nice collection for those who are looking for greater insight into how David’s poetry is applicable today.

HAVAH by Tosca Lee

The SUMMARY: This is the story of Eve--Havah in Hebrew--like you've never imagined before. From the opening of her eyes, to the joy and oneness in the Garden, to the first sin and exile, to life in the wilderness, to populating the earth, Tosca Lee breaths life into this well-worn story.

THE MESSAGE: There is more to the story of Adam and Eve than I ever thought. The days before there were words for grief, regret, sorrow, safe, and unsafe. The days of living in a land created by His passionate hand, a land of beauty and oneness. The days of suddenly being unable to discern Adam's thoughts, unable to stop obeying the flesh, experience vile emotions never born before, a feeling of being ruined in body, mind and spirit. And ultimately, knowing that the Lord is still near, still loves, and one day will bring his children back to Eden.

THE PRESENTATION: Tosca Lee presents a wonderful tale that made me long for Eden, almost hurt to be in God's presence as before the Fall. It's made me rethink my ideas of Heaven, and I can only explain it as a longing for a closeness with God. However, sometimes Tosca's writing is vague and difficult to follow, but she paints beautiful pictures and can giftedly capture emotion.

THE QUOTE: "The One was always with me, murmuring through the trees and whispering atop the grasses. I saw his face in the majestic Mount, heard his sighs rumbling from the heavens--saw his thumbprint in the tinest mustard seed."

3.5 out of 5

THE SUMMER THE WIND WHISPERED MY NAME by Don Locke

THE SUMMARY: Davy's world revolves around the joys of growing up in his neighborhood--an early morning paper route, street baseball, tree house meetings, homemade fireworks, and quirky neighbors. He emulates his father, and longs to be like him. Yet when a new family moves into the neighborhood, it causes a rift in Davy's family, and eventually, the entire neighborhood, dividing families, dividing neighbors. Davy suddenly doesn't recognize his father and wrestles with defending his father's actions and honestly looking at his dad's flaws.

THE MESSAGE: This is more than a story about racial prejudices in the 1960s. It's the story of a young man who suddenly realizes his father isn't perfect and begins to question many of his foundational beliefs. He longs for his father to be the dad of his dreams and wrestles with finding a balance between doing what is right and also honoring his father. And although Davy comes face to face with the ugly discrimination against a black family, he soon recognizes the many ways his neighbors judge all fringe members of society.

THE PRESENTATION: Author Don Locke writes from Davy's perspective. Thus, all adults are addressed as Mr. or Mrs., the joys of life are Good Humor trucks and Roy Rogers belt buckles, and the best way to seal a promise is with boogers. Most of the time Locke refrains from making Davy sound like an adult, although there are a few times Davy sounds older and wiser than his age. This is Locke's second book about Davy, although this one is a prequel to The Reluctant Journey of David Connors. It probably helps to read that book first as there are scenes in The Summer the Wind Whispered my Name that set up The Reluctant Journey.

THE QUOTE: "Maybe there was no real normal. And maybe that was a good thing. I wondered if maybe that's what God had in mind all along."

THE RECOMMENDATION: 3 out of 5

THE HEAVENLY MAN by Brother Yun

THE SUMMARY: Written by Brother Yun with Paul Hattaway, The Heavenly Man follows the life, struggles, persecution, dedication, and faith of Brother Yun, a Chinese house church leader. Turning his life over to Christ at 16, Brother Yun recounts his joys and hardships as he shared the Good News to a spiritually hungry culture from 1974 to 2001. Brother Yun is a man totally committed to following Christ at all costs. In and out of prison for years, Brother Yun endured beatings, electrocution, torture, crushed legs, and worms under his skin. Yet in the midst of his persecution, he didn't waiver in his faithfulness. He tells of singing praise songs while beating a drum with handcuffs; giving away his food to other prisoners; memorizing entire books of the Bible while behind bars; and turning cells into worship centers.

THE MESSAGE: Brother Yun encourages his readers to remember that God is faithful. If we obey God's leading in all situations, miracles will happen, regardless of the circumstances or the battles we face. He also calls out western churches to wake up from complacency, walk in the fire of the Holy Spirit, and to commit to taking the Gospel to unreached nations.

Brother Yun also does not shy away from sharing the sad consequences his family faced because of his faith and resulting persecution. His family lacked food, were dressed in rags, and battled resentment because of Brother Yun's commitment to God first and family second. His persecutors also forced Brother Yun's wife, Deling, to have a surgery preventing her from having more children because she violated the One-Child Law.

Brother Yun embraces his persecution and trials as friends, feeling that it is an honor to receive such attention for Christ's sake. And it is when his life looks the darkest that he experiences God's presence, love, and grace, the greatest.

THE PRESENTATION: Brother Yun's accounts are often mirrors of other familiar biblical heroes: Hearing God's voice like young Samuel, walking out of prison like Peter, and singing with prisoners like Paul. His frequent use of scripture breathes new life into familiar scriptures. He isn't afraid of detailing his shortcomings, from wrestling with a proud heart to disobeying the Lord's voice. However, his writing style feels wooden and unnatural at times, slowing down the pace.
THE QUOTE: "I have learned that when the Lord tells us to do something there is no time for discussion or rationale, regardless of the situation we face. When we are sure God has told us to act, as I was on this occasion, blind obedience is called for. Not to obey God implies that we are wiser than him, and that we know better how to run our lives than he does."

THE RECOMMENDATION: 4.5 out of 5
